The Facts on Laser Hair Removal

Smooth legsLet’s face it; spring is a love-hate thing. The days get longer, fragrant blooms are blossoming, lawns begin to show signs of life and then it hits us: “I will be wearing shorts very soon!”  Are you ready to display those legs that have not seen the light of day in several months and have grown their own winter coat? There’s no need to panic. We live in a world of ever-increasing solutions, and your legs have not been forgotten.

Laser Hair Removal is the answer for this swimsuit season, and all others – if it’s done right! But buyer beware, there are plenty of opportunities to get it wrong.  Here’s information you need to know when considering if laser hair removal is for you, and how to choose the best provider.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What are the benefits?

The biggest benefits of laser hair removal are appearance and convenience.  Many different areas of the body can be treated – including delicate areas, like a woman’s face, where hair is unwanted and options for removal are limited.  The convenience of permanently removing hair from a woman’s legs and underarms is a huge factor.  As one laser removal customer put it, “I love the freedom in being able to throw on a tank top or swimsuit and go out the door without a second thought.”

How long does it take?

Laser hair removal has a big advantage over electrolysis because it is much quicker.  An area like the underarms, for example, can be treated in just 10 minutes where electrolysis treatment is one hair at a time.  Laser hair removal can be a lunch time procedure, as there is no recovery time. Patients can return to work or play immediately after a session.  You should expect to need multiple sessions (five or more) to effectively remove hair and prevent it from returning, the number of which is dependent on the area and specific hair type.

Does it hurt?

Some clients liken the feeling to a rubber band being popped against your skin.  Most clients say the pain doesn’t even compare to that of waxing.  Additionally, many customers are happy to trade in the pain of ingrown hairs – which can get infected and for some individuals require antibiotics and become unsightly themselves – for the slight discomfort of the laser removal sessions.  And of course, certain areas of your body will be more susceptible to pain than others, and the pain tolerance of individuals varies as well.  If a client does experience discomfort, ibuprofen taken a couple hours before your session and/or a numbing cream applied on the area to be treated does wonders!

How much does it cost?

There is a wide range in pricing for laser hair removal, largely dependent on the size and condition of the area to be treated.  A reputable clinic will be able to provide you an upfront estimate of the cost in a (usually) complimentary consultation session so that you know your investment cost before you start treatment.  While the treatment is not cheap, and could cost you between a few hundred dollars to a couple thousand, it is often less expensive than electrolysis or repeated waxing.

Is it really permanent?

The effectiveness of laser hair removal depends on the characteristics of the individual. Skin type, hair type and pigment are all factors that can determine the outcome for a person or whether they are a candidate for laser hair removal. Based on these individual factors, our medically trained treatment providers determine the best choice of laser and best treatment plan to produce the most desirable results.
While laser hair removal can be performed on virtually any skin color and hair type, hair color is the most important factor. The light emitted from the laser is attracted to the dark pigment in the hair follicle. This means that dark hair is treated most effectively. Treatments performed on red, blonde, and gray hair are not generally as effective.

How to Choose the Right Provider:

If you have determined that, based on the facts, you want to learn more about laser hair removal, your next step is finding the right provider of services.  Here are some things you will want to consider to make sure you will get the most out of your investment.  These are items that should be covered in a free consultation upfront, so don’t pay anything out of pocket before you’ve learned the following about any provider you are considering.

Experience in laser hair removal.  Some salons may offer laser hair removal in addition to other services.  Ask about their experience.  How many treatments have they done?  How long have they been in business?  When did they start providing the service, and have they been keeping up with the changes in the industry?  Laser hair removal started 10 years ago, and has really progressed in the past five years.  Make sure any provider you select has performed many treatments without complication and has been improving their offering as the industry improves equipment and procedures.

Flexibility to treat different individuals.  Manufacturers have responded to the individuality of clients with a range of different lasers.  Ask any provider if they use multiple FDA-approved lasers, allowing them to  customize an individual’s treatment to their specific hair color and skin type.

Payment terms.  While the investment may need to be paid by you over time, you should not be surprised by the cost.  It can actually be more cost-effective to get a full quote for the entire treatment versus paying as you go, session by session.  You don’t want to be surprised by the cost after treatment begins.  Many treatment providers provide financing plans as well.

Guarantee.  You want to make sure the investment you’re making is backed by a written guarantee for effectiveness.  If the provider won’t guarantee the service (or takes a “let’s start and see” approach), go somewhere else.

Whether it’s unwanted female facial hair, the bikini line or back hair for a man, just imagine the time you would save never having to shave, tweeze or wax again. After a complimentary consultation and personalized treatment plan is in place the only question will be, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”
