I'm a mom to 2 great kids, ages 7 and 4, and a former middle school teacher. I write What's for Lunch at Our House, a three year+ bento blog about what my children are eating for lunch and cute, fun, unique ways to teach them to eat healthy.

Breakfast Kebabs

French Toast Kebabs

French Toast Kebabs, made with fresh fruit

As I learned a long time ago with my kids, and again with my last post, food on a stick is infinitely better than food on a plate.

We’ve often made meat & cheese kebabs for lunch time with crackers on the side, or fresh fruit kebabs, alternating berries or melons with a yogurt dip on the side.  We even have a collection of cute picks that we use to impale unsuspecting bits of lunch & dinner.

This all led me, the other morning, to wonder about making breakfast kebabs for the kids.  The fresh fruit kebabs would obviously work, but I wanted something a little bit different.  And I really wanted a slice of French Toast.   Since the kids love both French Toast & fruit, why not combine them?

The result:  French Toast Kebabs!  We kept it simple, regular French Toast, sliced into bite sized pieces, alternated with pieces of fresh melon or berries.  I also think this might be wonderful with banana or pineapple, but we went with the fruit that was already diced and ready to go.

Make Your Own:

You’ll need French Toast, of course.

Mine is simple.  I use an egg, some milk, and a sprinkle of cinammon, beaten together in a bowl.  Dip the bread (our favorite is Nature’s Own Honey Wheat) in the egg mixture and fry in a little pat of butter.

For this, I cooked mine a little longer than normal, so the outside was more crispy.  The softer pieces did not slide onto the kebab sticks very well.

Cut the French Toast into bite sized pieces and alternate pieces of French Toast & pieces of fruit on a kebab stick, leave a bit of a handle for dipping later!

Serve plain or with maple syrup or vanilla yogurt for dipping.  My kids like both–maple syrup for the French Toast pieces and yogurt for the fruit.
