Secretariat :: A Must See Family Flick

Thanks to Today’s Mama, myself and four friends were able to go to a special screening of the upcoming movie Secretariat!  We all loved the movie.  Here are my personal thoughts on it…

secretariat

I don’t necessarily call myself a horse person (or even an animal person for that matter) but I am a sucker for inspiring true stories, and that was my draw to see Secretariat.  Brief synopsis…After the death of Penny Chenery’s mother, she was forced to make some decisions regarding the family’s farm, as her father was in no condition to take care of it.  A horse she lovingly called Big Red was soon born, and Penny found herself pursuing a dream to see Big Red, or Secretariat, win the Triple Crown, a risky claim as it hadn’t been done in 25 years.

I’ll say right off the bat that I absolutely loved this movie.  It felt like the perfect dose of laughter, tears, drama, and suspense.  It definitely was not one of those movies where you’re looking at your watch waiting for it to end.   John Malkovich and his quirky self was the perfect person to play Secretariat’s trainer, Lucien Laurin.  His humor does not go unnoticed throughout the movie.

I’m in a season of life where I am learning to dream.  (I think so practically that it’s hard for me to just dream.)  Perhaps that was the most inspiring part of this movie for me.  Penny, played by the lovely Diane Lane, had a dream.  Even when people thought she was crazy, and she didn’t have the support from the ones she loved, she pursued that dream.  In the process, her family was inspired and moved by her pursuit and achievement.

Thanks for the review! The trailer looked good, but sometimes they can be deceiving. I’ll put this on my list of movies to see.
