Today we decided we would check out Scarborough Fair in Waxahachie. Now, being the people watcher that I am, I found this place to be absolutely the most interesting place I have ever been. It was amazing to see all the different characters. And people stayed in character the entire time. There were wizards, gnomes, palm readers, and anyone and anything else you may think to see in the Medieval era. It’s not only the employees of the fair either. Visitors come from all over dressed head to toe in their Renaissance garb.
Besides the people watching, there were interesting shows. The first thing that we took part in was watching a turtle race. Unfortunatly, our turtle did not win, but hey, we had fun cheering him on. While walking around we also ran into a few comedy shows, and then we saw some guy spinning around on his head. We caught the very end of it, so I’m not quite sure what that was all about.
There were shops every where as well. If you didn’t bring your belly dancer dress or your knight vest, no problem. They are for purchase all over. If you don’t want the comitment paying the price to keep an outfit, don’t you fear, they can be rented. Did we make a big purchase? No. We did buy two wooden swords for the boys to play with. We almost left with matching shields, but decided against them. I did want a crown of flowers. I had to talk myself out of it because I wasn’t sure if I would ever wear it, but they sure were pretty.
The food was pretty amazing too. We all four shared a turkey leg. I will have to say, that was the best turkey leg I have ever eaten. The boys loved it too. There were a few men walking around selling pretzels. I wanted one, but they were rather large and no one wanted to share with me.
All in all we had a good time. My oldest son was a little upset that he didn’t get to see knights fighting or princesses walking amonst the people, but we can always go to Mideivil Times for that. I think next time we go, I’ll have to splerge and buy a dress. I can always use it for Halloween.
