If you have a little on who likes trains, you do not want to miss this!
The Museum of the American Railroad, previously located at Fair Park in Dallas, is moving to Frisco…and that means the trains are moving, too!
Some of these trains are pretty famous, as far as trains go. The museum currently has (still in Dallas) a steam engine famed for its size and power. Only eight of these steam engines, known as Big Boy, currently exist. To see one is a treat. To see one *moving* is a rare treat.
The trains are being moved to the Frisco location as they are ready. From what I’ve read, a lot of preparation goes into moving these trains. Not only must the trains pass inspections and be safe to transport (many have been sitting at the Fair Park museum location for years now), but they must also wait to move until the railroads give them permission to travel. For these reasons, there are no set moving days/times.
However – you can keep up to date by following the museum’s facebook page. They are keeping the public updated as to when the trains will be moving, and what railroads they will be traveling on, so you can plan accordingly and be there to watch the trains leave, travel, or arrive at their new destination.
Big Boy should be rolling out sometime in late September, most likely before the State Fair starts. My son loves trains and would be happy to see any of these move, but I’m holding out for Big Boy in hopes that we can play a little part in history as watch it roll down the tracks to its new home.
