My husband’s birthday is in October, and he opted not to have a cake this year. Instead, he agreed to let me practice my candy making skills, and make Halloween treats. So to come up with some ideas, I did what every person does… I pulled up Pinterest. And, as always, Pinterest came through for me. I found the cutest mummy Twinkies that I just had to make (and by the way, all I had to say was “Twinkie” to get my husband excited).
I went to my local grocery store and picked up white chocolate chips, and Twinkies. I also had to make a run to Michael’s to grab some candy sticks, and just in case the chocolate chips didn’t work, Walton’s candy melts. To my delight, Michael’s had a huge display of Halloween candy making items, so while I was there I also bought a few trays of candy molds.
So to get started making my mummies, I laid unwrapped Twinkies on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet. I stuck the candy sticks in one end of each of them, and put them in the freezer to harden a bit.
After 30 minutes, I took the Twinkies out of the freezer, and followed the directions on the chocolate to melted it in the microwave. (I started out with the white chocolate chips, but later found that the white Walton’s candy melts did a better job.) After the chocolate was melted, and there were no lumps, I carefully dipped each of the Twinkies, covering them completely. Then I dipped a fork in the chocolate and drizzled it over each cake in a zig zag motion. I let them sit for a minute, and then drew on two eyes with black icing. I then placed them back in the freezer to set.
While I was waiting for those, I melted some more of the Walton’s melts, placed Oreo cookies in the molding treys, and poured the melted chocolate over them.
When all was done, the birthday/Halloween treats turned out to be a huge hit!! These were the easiest things I have ever made. I even put a few in baggies for the teachers at school. All Hale Pinterest!!
