I have a new goal. I want to run a marathon. I want to start out small with a 5k, then work my way up to a full marathon. With sprinting and all. Now, running is not my thing. In fact, I haven’t had my feet to the pavement (as they say) since I played soccer in high school. That was some time ago.
So what would make me get a wild hair and decide running was now something I want to partake in? Well, besides the obvious health and lifestyle benefits -and I’m a dork for saying this- Disney has their own marathon series. What Disney nut/fanatic/crazy person doesn’t want to participate in a run with others just like them? People running in tutus and fairy wings and princess garb galore! Sounds like so much fun! That is my ultimate goal. To do a Disney run.
So, a non runner wanting to start running in order to meet a goal…. How do we, or I, or you do that? I was introduced to a program called Couch To 5K. As always, there’s an app for that (C25K).
The program gets your endurance up. It helps you get ready for your 5k by pacing you. The program is meant to be done 3 days a week. The first week, you will start with a brisk 5 minute walk, then run for 60 seconds, walk for 2 minutes. You will alternate walking and running for 20 minutes, with a 5 minute cool down. The next week, you start with your 5 minute walk, run for 90 seconds, walk for 2 minutes, and keep that up for the 20 minutes. And then so on. Each week you will bump up the running. The app has a voice that tells you when it’s time to walk and run, so there is no need to keep track with that. Make sure, if using this app, that you don’t have your phone on vibrate. The voice will not talk to you if your ringer is turned off or down.
I’m in the middle of week 2 right now. I am doing a whole lot better than I anticipated. Mickey Mouse, I’ll be ready for you soon enough. In the mean time, I’ll try my luck at a few local color or mud runs.
